Summer Week 5

It has finally arrived, my friends, the final week of summer reading programming… but it will be a great one! Most importantly, your reading logs are due on Tuesday 7/26. Meredith will spend the evening stuffing some prize bags with goodies and you can pick them up on 7/27 & 7/28!

After the outdoor story time with Meredith at 11am on 7/26. We will be taking a break for a few weeks to recharge and we will be back with a fresh new story time on 8/16 @ 11am.

At 3:30pm on 7/26, we are so excited to host our very own Tin Mountain Conservation Center presenting on a favorite local water animal, beavers! There will be a mount, skull, skin, and chew for kids to investigate.

While our Tuesday events are ending, the Summer Reading continues. There’s still lots to do. The Friends of the Library will be hosting an open-air viewing of Whale Rider on August 6th at 8pm. Bring your comfiest chair, wear your PJs, and grab some snacks for a fun outdoor, family movie. (We will move indoors if the weather doesn’t cooperate.)

SRP Week 4

Don’t lose steam now, buckaroos. There’s less than two weeks to go in our reading log challenge. Yesterday I had a call from Pirate’s Cove offering us free game tokens to our readers. I ran right now there and picked them up!

This week we have our usual outdoor story time with Meredith at 11am on 7/19. We love these events with our youngest friends – last week we ended with an impromptu dance party!

At 3:30pm on 7/19, Greg Hufford of the NH Cooperative Extension will join us. He will give us some facts about rocks and minerals and some fun activities!

Then on Saturday 7/23 at 4pm join the Friends of the Library on our patio and under our tent for a potluck featuring recipes from Local flavors : cooking and eating from America’s farmers’ markets by Deborah Madison. We have lots of copies available now. It’s sure to be a pleasant afternoon picnic.

Summer Reading week 3

Now we are hitting a real stride with our Summer Reading. It so wonderful to see our summer families return to us. Some of you we haven’t seen in three years and the kiddos are all grown up!

This week we have our usual outdoor story time with Meredith at 11am on 7/12. Followed by a special Ocean Discoveries activity at 3:30pm with Meredith that I’m sort of sad I can’t participate in.

For the grown-ups out there, our book group will be discussing An American Marriage by Tahari Jones on Wednesday at 4pm after which the August selection will be available. That one is Detective in the Dooryard, by my friend Tim Cotton. I’ve been following his writing for years on the Bangor PD Facebook page. He’s a funny guy and this book should be great for late summer!

I have not seen many copies of Local flavors: cooking and eating from America’s farmers’ markets by Deborah Madison go out! This is our debut cookbook for our club meeting on 7/23. The idea is a group of us check out the same cookbook, then prepare something from it to share. This one features farmer’s market goodies! I hope you’ll join us – I would hate to picnic alone. Copies available now!

Radio, tent, and garden!

Pizza garden

On Tuesday we hosted Plant-a-pizza by starting our plot in the new community garden. We purchased some tomato, pepper, and zinnia seedlings and started basil and micro-greens from seed. A kind resident gave us oregano and thyme. Sounds like a tasty dinner! When you have a chance, stop by and check out the beautiful work by our neighbors in the new space. There’s still one plot available! Get in touch with me for details.

Lots going on this week. Yesterday I appeared on the Magic 104.5 morning show with my friend, Clay. We discussed the summer reading events and activities in Jackson as well as our other NNHLC libraries. If you missed it live, the recording is almost as good!

And finally, I was up and out early this morning to meet Abbott Tent Rental at the Library and supervise the delivery of a tent for our summertime events! We have lots planned and, just like the patio, it’s available for anyone to use at any time. Thanks to the Friends of the Jackson Library for generously funding the tent for us this summer.

Welcome to summer reading!

We have planned a whole summer of reading and activities in all kinds of places.

  • On Tuesdays we have story time at 11am on our patio or under our tent.
  • Also on Tuesdays, there are afternoon activities for older children at 3:30p. These are different every week, but most especially, don’t miss our kick-off event on July 5 with the return of local favorite, Cody Wells – our award-winning lego designer! Registrations requested, but not required!
  • Every Wednesday we will offer a new bag of take and make crafts. Sit down and make them with us or take them home!
  • Monthly programs for adults too! Cookbook club on July 23 and an outdoor movie on August 6!
