Giving Tuesday

We don’t talk about it much around here, but since you have your checkbook out and ready for Giving Tuesday, there are several ways you may contribute to help our fantastic Library be even more fantastic.

If you do a lot of online shopping this time of year, you could consider using Amazon Smile and designate the Friends of the Jackson Library as your beneficiary. It won’t cost you anything extra, but Amazon makes a small contribution on your behalf. Last year we got about $15 in Smile donations. We would love to increase that this year!

Want something more hands on!? You may wish to purchase a book for us. You may pick from our Wish List or, by all means, suggest something! You don’t have to buy from Amazon – White Birch or any other local business would be even better! We will always be more than happy to put your name first to read it or include a book plate commemorating your gift or both!

This year The Book Lover’s Calendar is back too. These make awesome Chanukah treats, stocking stuffers, or hostess gifts. Workman publishing has generously given us a great deal on these so most sales go directly to Library support. They are $14.99 each, $25 for two, or three or more for $10 each!

And, finally, our wonderful Friends of the Library has mailed its annual appeal letter, which you can read below. Donations have started coming in the mail but we are also happy to be able to accept them online as well. The Friends work, often behind the scenes, to provide many of the beloved touches that make this Library so outstanding. If you attend our evening programs or if your kids love our storytimes or look forward to our Summer Reading Programs, please become a Friend by contributing. If you checked out the new title from your favorite author or saw the new Wonder Woman DVD, thank the Friends of the Library! If you appreciate seeing the Library decorated for the season with white lights and pointsettias, that’s them too.

Dear Friends of the Library,

I am pleased to tell you about some of the wonderful contributions that you, the Friends of the Jackson
Public Library, have made in the past year.

Our frequent afternoon and evening presentations are organized and supported by the Friends. We hope you were among the nearly 500 people who enjoyed them this year as they featured great music by local talent, as well as short informative talks about gardening, social media, wildlife, housing, local history, and world travel among other topics. The summer reading and literacy programs for young people are always well attended. The families in our community thank you for making this possible each year.

In addition, Friends’ contributions continue to purchase most of our new books, periodicals, audio-visual resources and equipment. The librarian also has a “wish list” on our web site where books can be purchased and donated to the library in honor of a loved one. A book plate can be included in the front of the book in commemoration.

We also hope you know that this year the Friends purchased free passes to ten museums, as well as a trail pass at Jackson Ski Touring and that you were among the 66 library cardholders who so far have taken advantage of this very popular offering. With your help we can make this an ongoing program.

Your contributions once again helped the Library Trustees keep the town portion of the library budget at a reasonable level. The Town of Jackson generously pays for all salaries and building maintenance. The library receives a small amount of interest income from the library trusts. Funds for all other expenses come from your gifts. This year we were able to fund a significant capital expense for the redesigned office space for the Director of the Library. This was made possible through your generous contributions.

Of course, library friendship comes not only through monetary contributions; for example, this year 24 volunteers donated over 500 hours of their time helping our staff keep the library running efficiently. Organizing our annual Memorial Day weekend book sale requires a lot of planning and hard work from a larger group of volunteers.

We look forward to another great year at the Jackson Library. Your support will help both staff and volunteers maintain its high level of service. Thank you all for being such good Friends.

Sincerely
E. Allen Brooks, President
Friends of the Jackson Public Library
