Happy New Year!

The holidays have come and gone. There is snow on the ground. Many Library visitors have commented that they have already skied more than all year last year. Even I got to try out the new (to me) ski package I got at the Jackson Ski Touring sale!

I am also super hooked on Inspector Gamache. The first three were good enough to read the next, but just barely. I did try leaving them and reading something else, but missed the comfort of knowing the characters. The fourth book, though, A Rule Against Murder, I was hooked and read it it two days.

  • New Fiction
  • Days without end by Sebastian Barry. Find it at F BAR after January 24th.
  • The Fifth Petal by Brunonia Barry. This is a sequel to The Lace Reader which was set in Salem MA. I found it deeply engaging when I read it years ago and I am hoping this will be the same. Find it at F BAR after January 24th.
  • The Paris architect by Charles Belfoure. It was originally published in 2014, but still generates some buzz. I jumped on it when it appeared in a donation box. It’s labeled NEW-ish on the New Books. Find it at F BEL.
  • The sleepwalker by Chris Bohjalian. He usually focuses on a sub-culture group. I have learned a lot from him about what empathy and kindness really mean. Sometimes my eyes are opened in a way that’s scary, like the last one. And sometimes full of compassion. Find it at F BOH after January 10th.
  • Little deaths by Emma Flint. A mystery set in the 60s about two missing children. Publishers Weekly and Booklist both gave it starred reviews. Find it at F FLI after January 17th.
  • Air by Ryan Gattis. Find it at YA F GAT.
  • Different class by Joanne Harris. A new offering by the author of Chocolat. Find it at F HAR.
  • Lilac girls by Martha Hall Kelly. We had interlibrary loaned this for folks a few times before it appeared in some donations and we snapped it up. Early reviews are excellent. Find it at F KEL.
  • Fatal by John T. Lescroart. When I saw this was being released, I looked at how the other titles by this author have circulated in the past. It looks like he has a few fans in Jackson. Find it at F LES after January 24th.
  • The old man by Thomas Perry. I have several of you who are Daniel Silva fans who also liked the Thomas Perry we recently acquired. I have high hopes that this one will be just as popular. Find it at F PER.
  • Rather Be the Devil by Ian Rankin. Lots of thriller/mysteries in this months’ order. It seems an appropriate time of year for curling up with a murderer, doesn’t it? Find it at F RAN.
  • Cover me in darkness, old wounds run deep by Eileen Rendahl. Find it at F REN.
  • Lillian Boxfish takes a walk by Kathleen Rooney. An historical, literary fiction in the Downton Abbey genre. Find it at F ROO after January 17th.
  • Class by Lucinda Rosenfeld. I have been thinking a lot about class in the US lately. This is about an upper class woman who works supporting nonprofits for disadvantaged children, while sending her own children to a private school. The story centers around what happens when those two worlds intersect. Find it at F ROS after January 10th.
  • Because of the Sun by Jenny Torres Sanchez. Find it at YA F SAN.
  • Her every fear by Peter Swanson. Find it at F SWA after January 10th.
  • New Nonfiction
  • Dark money by Jane Mayer. I’ve noticed this one on the top of a couple Best of 2016 lists. Find it at 324.273 MAY.
  • The search for exoplanets: what astronomers know by Joshua N. Winn. This is a DVD of lectures with a booklet of powerpoints. Find it at 523.24 WIN.
  • The New Healthy Bread in Five Minutes a Day by Jeff Hertzberg M.D. My go-to bread recipe is from the original of this book. No kneading. Just mix, cover, let rise, and then throw it in oven on bake day. I bake when the coffee is brewing and the bread is ready for breakfast. I have to keep the loaves small, though, because I know they will eat it all. I’m looking forward to the variations in the new version. Find it at 641.8 HER.
