It is wonderfully busy around here lately. I am working on getting our new museum passes out there for you to borrow. There are a ton of great books coming out. Meredith and I had a hard time choosing what to buy. We can’t blow our budget for the year in the first month!
Several of the ones that made it to the order were requested by Library clients. If you read a review lately or your favorite author has a new one coming out, you will not injure our professional pride to ask about it. Please do!
- New Fiction
- What you break by Reed Farrel Coleman. Reads like modern noir. One of the reviews called it ‘soulful’ which is an adjective not often associated with mysteries. Find it at F COL after 2/7.
- The night bird by Brian Freeman. Set in San Francisco, features a serial killer. But soft, dear reader, Booklist says it creates “just enough tension without relying too heavily on goreājust the right amount of nastiness that will not scare away more-genteel thriller readers.” A thriller for those of us with a delicate nature – love it! Find it at F FRE.
- A Piece of the World by Christina Baker Kline. Reviewed in Real Simple magazine and inspired by the painting Christina’s World. On top of that it was requested by one of my favorite Jacksonians. (Jacksonite?) How do you feel about the genre of art-world novels? Find it at F KLI after 2/21.
- Pachinko by Min Jin Lee. It gives me such clairvoyant pleasure when I predict the next BIG THING and when everyone starts asking for it, we have it here already. This is one of those predictions. A multi-generational saga that follows a Korean family. Find it at F LEE after 2/7.
- The Lost Book of the Grail by Charlie Lovett. One of the things that I love about being a librarian is the sense of discovery it provides. At any moment I could find a valuable donation. Or a new friend – as so many of you have become. Or, maybe just a wonderful story. What happens when a flashy young american arrives to digitize *gasp* a cathedral library’s collection? Adventure and intrigue, natch. Find it at F LOV after 2/28.
- All That’s Left to Tell by Daniel Lowe. Recommended to me by Elizabeth Strout! Ok, well, maybe via a Jackson resident who got it from GoodReads but still… Find it at F LOW after 2/14.
- The Lonely Hearts Hotel by Heather O’Neill. I did not read The Night Circus, but the reviews put this in the same category. Apparently it’s quirky and goofy – a fantasy, fairy tale for grown-ups. Find it at F ONE after 2/7.
- The Impossible Fortress by Jason Rekulak. Born in 1976, any novel that is described as ‘a love letter to the 80s’ is interesting to me. It follows a 14 year old who meets, and falls for, a girl coder! Find it at F REK after 2/7.
- Carve the mark by Veronica Roth. Find it at YA F ROT.
- The Chilbury Ladies’ Choir by Jennifer Ryan. Find it at F RYA after 2/14.
- The animators by Kayla Rae Whitaker. Find it at F WHI.
- New Nonfiction

- What Washington gets wrong: the unelected officials who actually run the government and their misconceptions about the American people by Jennifer Bachner. Find it at 351.73 BAC.
- Heroin Addiction by Christopher Spinney. Christopher is a Bartlett resident who has published his own book about recovering from addiction. Find it at 362.29 SPI.
- A really good day: how microdosing made a mega difference in my mood, my marriage, and my life by Ayelet Waldman. Recommended by a local respected reader! Find it at 616.89 AYE.
- The last fish tale by Mark Kurlansky. Find it at 639.2 KUR.
- New in the Children’s Room

- Paul & Antoinette by Kerascoet. Find it at E KER.
- Be blest by Mary Beth Owens. Find it at E OWE.
- Mighty, mighty construction site by Sherri Duskey Rinker. Find it at E RIN after 2/14.
- Dream animals by Emily Winfield Martin. Find it at BB MAR.
- Journey through ash and smoke by Kate Messner. Find it at jF MES.
