In this dramatic episode, Charles takes Mary to an eye specialist when she begins to experience difficulty seeing. He is devastated to learn that she will most certainly lose her sight. When Mary does go blind, Charles and Caroline decide it would be best for her to attend a special school in Iowa. At first, Mary is reluctant to participate, but she develops a special bond with her teacher, Adam Kendall.

Charles' father, Lansford Ingalls, loses the will to live after his wife passes away. Charles brings him to Walnut Grove to be near his loved ones. Laura's horse is injured soon after and she believes it to be her Grandpa's fault. Feeling hurt, Lansford leaves town until Laura, having realized her mistake, seeks him out and insists that he return with her.
